Welcome to our MINECRAFT in Education Page!
MINECRAFT is an open-world video game where players are free to explore a virtual world in which they can use textured cubes to build 3D structures. Besides construction, players can also participate in gathering resources, designing, and engaging in combat. There are 4 varieties of game modes which each promote different activities and skills: survival, creative, adventure, and multiplayer. The game has sold nearly 20 million copies and is extremely popular with children, youth and adults. We believe this PC game has many applications inside the classroom, in subjects like Geography, English, Math, Visual Arts and many more!
Building Digital Citizens
Much of our work in PED 3119 has been centred around teaching our students how to be digital citizens. As we know, digital citizenship is a concept which helps teachers, technology leaders and parents to understand what students, children, and technology users should know to use technology appropriately. Digital citizenship is more than just a teaching tool; it is a way to prepare students for a society full of technology.
MINECRAFT is a perfect tool to help in this process because it is a virtual world in which players can interact one with another. Players playing within the same server form a community. Every decision a player takes has a consequence, both on the player who made it and the other players. Although players can play by themselves, working together leads to better and more successful worlds. We believe that MINECRAFT allows for endless possibilities and discoveries that both teach and help the student discover for himself/herself. Used appropriately, it can create a community not only within the game, but within the classroom as well.
Please check out the video below to begin to get a sense of all of the possibilities that MINECRAFT offers for learning, both in content area and in terms of digital citizenship. Then, follow the links below to find out how you can use MINECRAFT in your own classroom!
